Our School manages several pieces of high-end instrumentation that is available to researchers within and outside the School.

 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometry

Bruker Avance 400 contact: John Mcloughlin or Damien McGuirk

Controlled access only. Available for use by researchers in the School of Chemical Sciences, who have been trained and assessed to be competant on the 400Mhz NMR. Samples may be run by researchers during normal working day time hours. Training is provided as per technical officers above.  Overnight samples are run every evening  Mon. - Fri. via logbook request.

 Scanning Electron Microscopy

Hitachi S3400n SEM, Tungsten system contact: Veronica Dobbyn, Aisling McCarthy  Mary Ross

 Magnification x 300k, Resolution 3.0 nm. Restricted access. Available for use by authorisedresearchers only, in the School of Chemical Sciences. Other schools by arrangement with the chief technical officer Authorised users are those who have completed scheduled training by a technical officer and have been assessed as competent on the SEM. Available in one hourly slots daily to a maximum of 8 hours per week per researcher unless by special arrangement. Key available from technical officers only. Authorised users may book time on SEM calendar on notice board outside X161.

 

 Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy

Hitachi 5500 contact:  Veronica Dobbyn, Aisling McCarthy  Mary Ross

Magnification x 1000k, Resolution 0.5nm. Restricted access. Available for use by authorised researchers only, in the School of Chemical Sciences. Samples analysed by request with technical officers. Other schools by arrangement with the chief technical officer.

 Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry

HP6890 GC, HP 5973 MS contact: Mary Ross

Restricted access. Available for use by researchers in the School of Chemical Sciences, who have been trained and assessed to be competent on the GCMS. Training is provided by technical officers as above. Available for 4 week sessions, agreeable with technical officers and entered on booking system. Must provide own capillary column.

 Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission spectroscopy

Varian Liberty 220 contact: Vincent Hooper

Restricted access. Available for use by authorised researchers only, in the School of Chemical Sciences. Authorised users are those who have completed scheduled training by a technical officer and have been assessed as competent on the ICP. Available for use by arrangement with technical officer.

Fourier Transform Infra Red Spectroscopy (with Multiscope and ATR options)

Controlled access. Available for use by researchers only, in the School of Chemical Sciences.

 

Perkin Elmer Spectrum 100 contact: Vincent Hooper

Restricted access. Available for use by authorised researchers only, in the School of Chemical Sciences. Authorised users are those who have completed scheduled training by a technical officer and have been assessed as competent on the FTIR.. Available for use by arrangement with technical officer.
