Correspondence Courses for Primary School Students 2011 - 2012

CTYI offers a range of correspondence courses for students at primary school level. We have courses designed for both 8-10 year olds and 11-13 year olds.
Students may apply directly to CTYI and need not have taken an assessment with us. The courses begin in October 2011. Assignments have a deadline each month. Upon submission by email, each course tutor corrects the student's work and returns individual feedback so that students may gain in knowledge and confidence with their chosen subject. Feedback can be expected one week after the assignment was submitted.

Autumn Term Correspondence Courses

These courses involve 3 assignments, with deadlines between October and December 2011.
Course Fee: €75

Science Trio The word science derived from the Latin scientia meaning knowledge. It a process by which we build and organize knowledge about the world in which we live. In this introductory course, students will be given the opportunity to delve into the fascinating realms of physics, chemistry and biology. They will be encouraged to explore science practically at home by re-creating experiments that test established scientific principles. These experiments will therefore give students a deeper knowledge and understanding of how the world works.
(Parents should note that adult supervision is required for all experiments and while materials will not be supplied by CTYI they should all be easily available from supermarkets).
Maths Trio Mathematics is used throughout the world as an essential tool in many fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine, and the social sciences. It is an invaluable instrument used to shape our knowledge and understanding of practically every subject! In this introductory course, students will be given the opportunity to delve into fascinating world of puzzle solving, problem solving and practical mathematics. It is a challenging course that requires perseverance and patience.
Writing Trio Is there a budding novelist, script writer, poet or lyricist within you? If so, Writing Trio might be for you. This introductory course will enable students to expand upon their existing writing skills and open the door to new creative avenues. There will be a chance for the student to delve deep into his or her imagination and create new characters, settings and even universes! On a practical level, students will be given the opportunity to create characters, stories and even scripts and work on writing dialogue and well as constructing poetry. This course is suitable for beginner writers or students who wish to build upon the skills which they have already acquired. Every student will be assigned a tutor who will give individual feedback on each assignment. By the end of the course the students should have a better understanding of the writing process and have built up a short writing portfolio.

Year Long Courses

These courses involve 6 assignments, with deadlines between October 2011 and April 2012. The courses are aimed at 8-10 year olds and 11-13 year olds.

8, 9, 10 Year Olds
Mental Maths! (8,9,10 Year Olds) If you like solving maths puzzles and enjoy new challenges then this is the course for you! This course will cover everything from Ancient Maths to modern day twists. This course can be challenging at times and requires perseverance. All solutions will be provided before the end of the course. There will be six assignments and students will receive feedback on each assignment from a qualified tutor. While the course is very child centred it is recommended that parents ensure that assignments are returned on time and that students understand the requirements of each assignment.
Calling all scientists! (8,9,10 Year Olds) This course is designed to give students the opportunity to explore science in a practical way at home. We will study scientific topics from smelly Chemistry to messy Biology and practical Physics. There will be six assignments and students will receive feedback on each assignment from a qualified tutor. Parents should note that adult supervision is required for all experiments and while materials will not be supplied by CTYI they should all be easily available from supermarkets. Please note that students who took the pilot online science course last spring should not sign up for this course as some experiments will be repeated.
Get Writing (8,9,10 Year Olds) This course will introduce students to the writing process. There will be a chance to create characters, write film scripts and develop a short story. Each month students will get a chance to work on their writing skills by completing a fun assignment. Every student will be assigned to a tutor who will give individual feedback on each assignment. By the end of the course the student should have a better understanding of the writing process and have built up a short writing portfolio for future revision.
11, 12, 13 Year Olds
Astronomy (11, 12, 13 Year Olds) The word astronomy is derived from the Greek astronomia which literally means “law of the stars” (astron for “star” and nomos for “laws or culture”). In general, astronomy refers to the study of the physical and chemical properties of objects and matters outside Earth’s atmosphere. Even though man has studied the heavens for thousands of years, we still know very little about the Universe we live in! As we learn more, it can be confusing yet amazing! This amazing online course will keep you interested while challenging you with strange astronomy facts and experiments! There will be four assignments each exploring a different aspect of astronomy.
Number Crunch! (11, 12, 13 Year Olds) (formerly Number Wang) This is a new challenging fun and rewarding maths course for older students. The aim of this course is to stretch the mind and provide you with new problem solving skills. This course can be challenging at times and requires perseverance. There will be six assignments and students will receive feedback on each assignment from a qualified tutor. While the course is very child centred it is recommended that parents ensure that assignments are returned on time and that students understand the requirements of each assignment.
Weird & Wonderful Science (11, 12, 13 Year Olds) This is a practical science course for the budding scientist within! Students will learn about various scientific subject matters, from explosive Chemistry to yucky Biology. There will be six assignments and students will receive feedback on each assignment from a qualified tutor. Parents should note that adult supervision is required for all experiments, and while materials will not be supplied by CTYI, they should all be easily available from supermarkets. Please note that students who took the pilot online science course last spring should not sign up for this course as some experiments will be repeated.
The Writer Within (11, 12, 13 Year Olds) If you have an interest in writing and want to develop this skill then this is the course for you. The assignments will include writing dialogue and haikus and creating settings in stories. Students will also get the opportunity to edit or improve on existing work. Each assignment will be read by a qualified tutor who will give constructive feedback to improve the writing skills of the participants. This course is suitable for beginner writers or advanced students who wish to enhance their writing skills.
