School of Education Studies

Post Graduate Research

The School of Education Studies offers three routes for those who are interested in pursuing post-graduate research in education or training; MA, PhD and EdD.

MA and PhD Research

The traditional MA and PhD by research have been in existence for a number of years and many of those who have obtained these qualifications in the School of Education Studies have come from the fields of second-level education, higher education, nursing education and management training. Students who opt for an MA or PhD engage in an individual research journey that is supported by an academic supervisor who will assist them in drawing up a plan for their research and the writing of their thesis.

Doctor in Education

Students can also engage in post-graduate research on the Doctor in Education (Leadership) programme. The EdD (Leadership) is a research degree for experienced professionals from education and related fields who would like to extend their professional understanding and develop skills in research, evaluation and high-level reflection on practice. The programme aims to foster professional development through research as well as meeting the requirements of rigour and originality expected of a doctorate. It includes assessed taught courses, research-focused workshops and supervised original research. The student cohort provides an important element of the programme. From the start students work with a specialist supervisor to begin to develop research in a field of their choice related to their professional interests.
