Target Audience:
This session will be of interest to any member of staff who handles *personal information stored electronically or
manually, and accessed either on-site at DCU or remotely.
Aims of this course:
This 45 minute presentation will introduce staff to the Irish Data Protection legislation, providing an overview of the
key concepts and definitions. The Acts examine three key headings:
• The rules and obligations on the Data Controller (DCU)
• The rights provided to the Data Subject (the individual about whom information is recorded) and
• The enforcement mechanisms of the Data Protection Commissioner.
The presentation rounds off with some practical recommendations as to how staff can achieve and maintain compliance
with the legislation. There will be a limited Q+A opportunity after each presentation.
* Under the legislation, personal data includes all written, graphic (photos and video), acoustic (recordings) and
physiological (medical, descriptive, etc.) data which directly or indirectly (through serial numbers, codes
or references) identifies a living individual.
