Welcome to DCU's Mentoring Scheme

What is Mentoring?
Why would I want to have a Mentor?          Why would I want to be a Mentor?

DCU is pleased to launch a new and innovative Mentoring Scheme for the year 2012.  The pilot is intended initially for early career academics (lecturers) with up to 3 years service in DCU.  Following an evaluation of the pilot, the scheme will be extended to include more experienced academics as well as other categories of staff.

Mentoring is a means of providing structured support to a member of staff (mentee) whereby a more experienced staff member (mentor) will assist the mentee in developing himself/herself both professionally and personally.

For mentees, the scheme is designed to facilitate them in benefiting from the knowledge and experience of more experienced academic staff whose guidance will assist in dealing with the everyday challenges of University life including:

  • achieving a balance between different duties and commitments
  • providing information about the university, it’s structures and key contacts
  • seeking research funding and communication of research to appropriate audiences
  • developing networks and involvement with different groups and bodies both internal and external to the university

For mentors, participation in the scheme will provide them with the opportunity to contribute to the development of less experienced academic colleagues as well as developing their own leadership skills. Mentors will be senior academic staff including professsors and senior lecturers.

Please sign-up for one of the training sessions by emailing Training.Development@dcu.ie.
