Protocol for the Medical Management of Occupational Injuries sustained on DCU Campus

- Transfer to Appropriate Medical Care Following First Aid Review

Where, in the opinion of a DCU First Aider, a student or a member of staff should attend a Hospital A&E Department / Rapid Injury Clinic the following procedures apply;

 

             Where Emergency Ambulance Assistance is required:

          Dial 5999 (DCU Security Emergency Line) and notify that an ambulance is required. Inform security which building (and which room in the building) the ambulance should

          attend and what the nature of the emergency is.

          If First Aider Wishes to Contact the Emergency Services Directly:     

          Dial 7999 from any internal phone or 0 (for outside line) then 999 – you will be connected to the emergency services directly

          Ask for an Ambulance to attend Dublin City University Campus, Collins Ave, Dublin 9. Specify which building the casualty is in (Henry Grattan, Sports Complex etc).Request              that the ambulance enter the Campus from Collins Avenue and report to DCU Main Reception where security will be awaiting its arrival.

          Dial 5999 (DCU Security Emergency Line) and notify Security that an ambulance is on its way. Inform Security which building (and which room in the building) the ambulance

          should attend and what the nature of the emergency is.

             

  1. Security will meet the ambulance at Reception and accompany it (or direct it, if after hours) to the designated building.

    If possible have someone wait at the entrance to the building to take the ambulance personnel directly to the casualty

  2. Where Non Emergency Injury Care is required Where, in the opinion of the First Aider, the injured party does not require ambulance assistance, they should be advised to attend the Mater Smithfield Rapid Injury Clinic (Opening Hours Mon – Fri 8am – 6pm).http://www.mater.ie/smithfield/Mater_Smithfield.pdf

         This clinic, which offers assessment and treatment to any­one who has sustained an injury, has direct access to x-ray and laboratory tests and pro­vides a full range of urgent

         care services.   


  1. Conditions Treated by the Clinic

    Minor Head/Facial Injury
    • Facial trauma
    • Lacerations to face and head
    • Ear trauma
    • Nasal trauma
    Upper Limb Injury
    • Shoulder injury
    • Collar bone injury
    • Upper arm/elbow and forearm injury
    • Wrist/hand/thumb fractures, dislocations, soft tissue injuries and   tendon injuries
    Lower Limb Injuries
    • Leg/knee/ankle/foot injuries
    • Muscle strains and aches
    • Fractures/dislocations
    • Foot pain
    Wounds
    • Cuts/lacerations/skin tears
    • Burns
    • Animal/insect bites
    • Acute skin infections

    Conditions Not Treated by the Clinic

    • Children under 16 years of age
    • Pregnancy related conditions
    • Psychiatric conditions
    • Extremely ill patients who have collapsed or require hospital admission
    • Cardiac conditions
    • Serious medical/trauma cases
    • Any person with an altered level of consciousness

     

    Transfer to the Clinic by Taxi - Finglas Cabs, Ph - 8343333.

    First Aiders can order a taxi through DCU Reception (office hours) and through Security (after hours) and the taxi can be charged to Health & Safety Office account.

    • Taxi transfer of injured parties requiring medical attention outside clinic opening hours (8am – 6pm Monday – Friday) must be to Beaumont or Mater Hospital A&E
