The aims of the Centre are:

  • To facilitate, promote and conduct high-quality interdisciplinary research in the areas of textual & corpus studies, using in particular, bilingual and multilingual corpora
  • Translation
  • Interpreting
  • Foster education in textual studies at all levels

The research activities of the Centre can be broadly subdivided into:

  • The creation or enhancement of a number of electronic text-based resources;
  • The exploitation of these corpora to investigate different aspects of translation.

As multilingual, corpus-based approaches are relatively new, an important part of the Centre's work is to test new methodologies in textual studies. Researchers in the Centre are currently working in French, German, Irish, English (including Hiberno-English) and Italian.

Current research projects include:

  • An investigation of translation strategies in a corpus of English scientific texts and their French translations;
  • A linguistic analysis of medical texts, aimed at different participants in medical practice (doctors, patients, support groups, etc.);
  • The creation and exploitation of an LSP corpus (Language for Specific Purposes);
  • An investigation into the implications of dubbing children's TV programmes in a majority language (German) into a minority language (Irish);
  • A guide to undertaking research at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Translation Studies;
  • Irish women translators in the context of Irish-Italian cultural relations;
  • Translators and translation in the new economy;
  • A corpus-based approach to translation evaluation.
