Career Planning - Starting Career Planning

There is a real truth in the saying "Information is Power". Often, when it comes to thinking about planning the next career move, its not so much lack of options or inability to make a decision that holds us back but rather the fact that we just haven't gathered all the relevant information needed to make an informed choice. Use our guide to researching your career:

Step 1 - Start with thinking about who you are and what you want. Read our self-assessment guide and use the Prospects planner software available on networked PCs in DCU and online. You may also wish to make an appointment to see your careers advisor.

Step 2 - Find out what skills employers want - especially transferable skills - how you can apply the skills you have developed into work situations.

Step 3 - Explore occupations and types of jobs.

Step 4 - Think about creating and maintaining a CV.

Step 5 - Think about what you might like to do when you finish college - getting a job, undertaking further study, taking time out or starting your own business are just some of your options.

Step 6 - Attend seminars, presentations and other careers events on campus

Step 7 - Know where to find information. Use this site, GradIreland and explore the links we recommend, find a range of searchable material in the careers library, call to the careers office in CG28 Henry Grattan Building, where you can take away free copies of a range of handbooks and guides. We also have current application packs for the main accountancy and other recruiting firms at the appropriate times of the year.
