Disability & Learning Support Service

In-Class Supports

Students registered with the DLSS may be allocated in class supports.

These academic supports are put in place to support students that cannot take their own notes or need to access the content of the class differently.

Examples of in class supports

  • Personal Assistant
  • Notetaker
  • CART typist
  • Sign language interpreter
  • Use of a digital dictaphone
  • Use of a Radio Aid

Please note that:

Students who have been recommended the use of a digital dictaphone are told they must liaise with their lecturer regarding this support.

Notetakers often do not know the identity of the student they are taking notes for. Where notetakers are aware of the students identity they are not allowed to reveal the students identity to anyone including lecturers.

If lecturers have any problems with Notetakers in their class they should contact Ted Harvey the Disability Officer by email: Ted.Harvey@dcu.ie or call him on ext 5208

Radio Aid users will need the co operation of lecturers to wear the microphone.

CART typist will generally need a seat at the front of the lecture room

Sign language interpreters will sit at the front of the lecturer room facing the deaf student
