THE FIRST POINT OF CALL IS THE NURSE
The Nurse provides a 'drop-in' facility, to discuss health problems and receive treatment where appropriate. The Nurses operate a daily triage clinic and appointment clinics for various consultations during opening hours.
The Health Centre runs daily Doctor’s Surgeries on campus Monday to Thursday during semester time. This service is provided by doctors from the Custom House Square Medical Centre. Custom House Square Medical Centre offers extended surgery access with continuity of care to students of DCU at their main centre of practice with a student discount on normal consulting rates.

All appointments for this service are made strictly through a referral system only from the Student Health Centre and the Counseling and Personal Development Service.
Nurse/Doctors Consultations
Student may book a one-one consultation with a health care professional for health advice. Students that ‘walk in’ with illness are assessed/triaged by the nurse and referred to the doctor if necessary.
Phlebotomy (blood tests)
We run a clinic to carry out routine blood tests once a week for a nominal fee of 10Euros. All bloods must be requested by a GP. We can facilitate bloods requested by other General Practitioners by pre-arrangement.
Chlamydia clinic
Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections and often produces no symptoms. This clinic offers health education to a student on the various sexually transmitted infections and a urine test to detect Chlamydia for a small nominal fee.
Dressing clinic
This clinic offers wound care and assessment of accidents. We can also care for wound post surgery by pre-arrangement with individual consultations or general practitioners. E.g. pilonidial sinus, suture removal
Ear irrigation
Students need to pre-book an appointment with the Nurse for ear irrigation. This may be needed if ear drops do not work. Irrigating the ear with water will usually clear plugs of earwax.
Hepatitis B Vaccination clinic
This clinic is offered to students within the Faculty of Sports Science and Health. The Hepatitis B vaccine is recommended for anyone who is exposed to blood or other potentially infectious body fluids. The Hepatitis B vaccination is a series of three shots given over a 6-month period. The second shot is administered 1 month after the first dose. The third shot is given 6 months after the first.
Referrals
Referral, on request or where deemed appropriate by a Counsellor or other relevant person. Sports injury referrals, hospital referrals
Contraception/Family planning advice.
Students can pre-book the Nurse to discuss contraception/family planning issues. We encourage students to attend for unplanned pregnancy advice and assistance. We offer a weekly repeat pill prescription clinic. Students need to allow one week notice for booking any appointments for routine repeat prescriptions.
A nurse call-out service is available for health emergencies.
This service is offered for on-campus call-outs only. For staff, the local first aider should be your first port of call.
Nutrition counseling
Students may attend us to get help on their eating habits, learn about healthy eating and maintaining dietary changes. Body mass index or BMI maybe carried out.
Advice and support on any health or personal matter
The nurse can offer advice on any personal, social issues or just provide a listening ear to any student having difficulties throughout their academic year.
